The quick answer
If you live in the Pacific Northwest, Ziply Fiber’s $20/mo 100 Mbps plan is the cheapest real broadband in America. Nationally, look for Sparklight ($24.95), Frontier Fiber ($29.99 for Fiber 200, symmetrical), Spectrum, including former Cox areas ($30 for a year), Mediacom, Midco, WOW! and Fidium (~$30), or T-Mobile/Verizon 5G home at $35 bundled with mobile. Qualifying low-income households can stack Lifeline’s $9.25/mo federal discount.

Low-income programs that still exist
The pandemic-era ACP ended in mid-2024, but two paths remain: Lifeline — the FCC’s $9.25/mo subsidy (lifelinesupport.org) for households on SNAP, Medicaid, SSI and similar programs; and provider low-income plans — e.g. Sparklight Lift (200 Mbps at a reduced rate) and similar offers from Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, and Mediacom, typically $10–$30/mo for qualifying households.
Cheap-internet traps to avoid
- The 12-month cliff — a $25 promo that becomes $65 isn’t cheap; check the step-up before ordering.
- Equipment leases — $10–$15/mo turns a $25 plan into $40. Prefer included-equipment providers.
- Data caps — overage fees erase savings; confirm unlimited data.
- Too-slow tiers — below 100 Mbps, a busy household will feel it. Cheapest usable ≠ cheapest listed.
