Short version
Choose DIRECTV via Internet if the broadband at your address is dependable and you want no annual contract; choose satellite if internet there is weak, if you want more channels in each tier, or if you want the price held for two years. Package names and advertised starting prices match; delivery, contract and channel count are what differ.

Where streaming fits
Streaming suits most homes whose broadband holds up, and that is the one part you can check before calling: the FCC coverage data in our ZIP search shows which internet providers report service in your ZIP. The service itself has no annual contract and no early-termination fee, every package starts with a 5-day free trial, and the Gemini Air plugs into an HDMI port and gathers live TV, unlimited Cloud DVR, Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video into one guide. Allow roughly 8 Mbps per HD stream and about 25 Mbps for comfortable 4K or several TVs. Renters and people who move often tend to land here.
Where satellite fits
Satellite gives you 175+ to 350+ channels per tier, against 90+ to 185+ by streaming, and no internet connection is needed, which still settles the matter at many rural addresses. The 24-month agreement works both ways: leaving early costs $20 per remaining month, but you also get a 2-year price guarantee that streaming does not have, which matters because DIRECTV adjusted prices in June 2026. Severe storms can briefly interrupt the signal (“rain fade”), though a well-aimed dish makes that uncommon.
One thing to know for 2026: in a limited trial, DIRECTV has stopped offering new satellite signups in select metro markets and points new customers to streaming instead. That is another reason we confirm what your address qualifies for on the call.
Dishes, landlords and HOAs
A landlord or HOA has less say over a dish than many people assume. The FCC’s Over-the-Air Reception Devices (OTARD) rule protects the right to put up a satellite dish under one meter across in space you rent or use exclusively, such as a balcony or patio, with narrow exceptions. If you would rather skip that conversation, DIRECTV via Internet needs nothing on the outside of the building, which is why renters often choose it.
What stays the same
- Each package’s name and advertised starting price is shared: PREMIER $169.99, ULTIMATE $124.99, CHOICE $94.99 and ENTERTAINMENT $89.99/mo. base, with first-month streaming promos from $59.99.
- From CHOICE upward, regional sports networks, subject to an RSN fee set by market of up to $23.99/mo.
- The DIRECTV app away from home, allowing up to 3 out-of-home streams at once.
- Local channels where DIRECTV offers them; on streaming, dropping locals saves $12/mo.
- The order: one call to us for either route, then fulfillment, billing and support come from DIRECTV.
Deciding
Dependable broadband and no contract → DIRECTV via Internet. Patchy internet, more channels or a two-year price lock → satellite. The deciding facts belong to the address, which is why we check both routes for yours on one call and say plainly if one of them does not suit it.
